“Learning “Cisco” networking can be very useful, provided the reasons for learning are right. Let me explain… First, you need to ask yourself why you want to learn networking. If the reason is good enough, then you can move on to which one, Cisco or something else. Now let’s come back to the original question Why Cisco??? The answer is simple… Cisco owns the largest share of worldwide networking equipment. So, the employment opportunities with knowledge of Cisco devices are very good. As I understand you want to make a career in Networking, so first you need to start with CCENT. * Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT) validates the ability to install, operate, and troubleshoot a small enterprise branch network, including basic network security. With a CCENT, a network professional demonstrates the skills required for entry-level network support positions – the starting point for many successful careers in networking. The curriculum covers networking fundamentals, WAN technologies, basic security and wireless concepts, routing and switching fundamentals, and configuring simple networks. CCENT is the first step toward achieving CCNA, which covers medium-size enterprise branch networks with more complex connections. CCENT is more towards basic networking and is generally vendor-neutral. * Then we move on to CCNA R&S. Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) validates the ability to install, configure, operate, and troubleshoot medium-size router and switched networks, including implementation and verification of connections to remote sites in a WAN. CCNA curriculum includes basic mitigation of security threats, introduction to wireless networking concepts and terminology, and performance-based skills. This new curriculum also includes (but is not limited to) the use of these protocols: IP, Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP), Serial Line Interface Protocol Frame Relay, Routing Information Protocol Version 2 (RIPv2), VLANs, Ethernet, access control lists (ACLs). Then you have plenty of options like continuing with the core Routing and Switching track i.e. CCNP R&S and CCIE R&S or you can move on to Security, Voice (Collaboration), and Wireless. All these tracks have CCNA, CCNP, and CCIE levels. Then there are some specialized tracks like Data Centre, Service Provider Design Architect, etc. A suggested approach would be to do CCNA or CCNP R&S and then find a job and get real-world experience. Thereafter, follow your likings and get additional qualifications in Security or Voice or go for CCIE in R&S. This will help in career progression, and maybe you can do some other certifications. A firewall remains a firewall and a router remains a router… Only the configuration and some additional features may vary. So even if you learn Cisco equipment, you can easily adapt to other vendor products. Hope it helps…”

I completed the course over the summer and passed my exam in September, opening up more advanced defensive IT learning opportunities for my students. Over the next 3 years our small rural high school consistently achieved top 5 finishes (including the first finalist all-female team in 2019 and Top Defenders in 2021) against top STEM schools from across the country. This past Fall I was seconded to ICTC and I’m now doing outreach to educators across Canada and hoping to create a national framework for cyber-education.
